Finding the Nutrition Plan That's Right for You

Running on beachSo, you have found a new training program and you are loving it. You are ready to tackle your diet, but you are not sure where to start. There is so much information out there when it comes to diet that it can be overwhelming. Juicing? Low-carb? Paleo? Vegan? The list keeps going and it is difficult to pick one.

Different people react to different foods. Some populations handle dairy better than others. People in Latin America over time have eaten different foods than people in northern Europe. Their diets will look different. One group might eat a considerable amount more carbohydrate than the other. The other might consume higher amount of fatty, cold water fish because that is what is available and they cannot farm all year long. They are working with what is available. With our current global farming practices, we are able to have most fruits and vegetables whenever we would like, even when they are not in-season where we live.

What Diet is Best?

To say that one diet is the be-all end-all for everyone is a bit silly. How could this be? There are too many food varieties and people from different regions from around the world for this to be possible. So how do we know what diet works best for us? Start tracking your food and meal times throughout the day.

For example, if you ate lunch at 1pm, how did you feel at 3pm? Sleepy? Energized? Most people can't understand this is one of the easiest ways to build an individualized diet. If you eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast at 7am and you are tired and starving by 9am, that should be an indicator that something is wrong. You slept all night and just ate. How could you possibly be tired and hungry at 9am? Try a few eggs the next day and see how you feel. Did it give you energy? Yes!? Fantastic! Write it down and add it to your arsenal.

This is a very simplistic way to figure things out. Not a magic blood test or some generic guidelines in an ebook you bought because someone is claiming it changed their life and you should do it, too.

Once we get the food tracking down, we will move on to discussing food quality with an individual. This process is not a quick fix, but that is the point. Working with a coach, you will learn what foods you should eat, when you should eat them and what to look for as far as feedback from your diet.
